Lining the streets

Till January 20: Sprouts 2009, an exhibition of paintings by the disciples of P.D. Paul – Aditya, Arvind, Jennifer, Sheena and Subirthana (at the Vinnyasa Premier Art Gallery).

Till January 24: Lining the Streets, life and living on a Chennai street, an exhibition of collaborative artwork featuring A.V. Ilango, Biswajit Balasubramanian and Ranjitha Ashok (at the Forum Art Gallery).

Till February 10: An exhibition of paintings by G. Raman, M. Pakiri, K.N. Ramachandran, C. Douglas, Rajavelu and Jayachandran based on characters seen in everyday life in rural South India (at Athreyaa Art Gallery, Chetpet).

January 23: The Secret Revolutionary: Brahms and his Tradition, a classical piano concert by Mira Sundara Rajan. Trained classical pianist and professor, Mira T. Sundara Rajan, offers this recital and discussion of the German Romantic tradition: its roots in the mystical late works of Beethoven, the rediscovery of Bach by the Romantic masters, and the vast possibilities of the Romantic imagination illustrated by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. The focus will be on Brahms (at Max Mueller Bhavan, 6.30 p.m.).

January 25: Naad Lahari will present a concert mainly of Indian Classical (Carnatic & Hindustani) music and blend them with Western concepts of orchestration and arrangement (at Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, Chetpet).

January 28-February 14: Traveling Lens Eye, a photo exhibition by Varun Gupta. Born and raised in Calcutta, Varun Gupta now calls Chennai his house. In this exhibition he showcases photos of his latest travels to Ladakh for the first time (at Max Mueller Bhavan).

From January 30: Celebrating Devi, an exhibition curated by the arts management students at DakshinaChitra. Their group project is on the concept of the Mother Goddess in India. It will be accompained by education workshops and Kerala folk performing arts (at DakshinaChitra Art Gallery).

February 9: Dr. Stephen Inglis, Deputy Director, Canadian Museum of Civilisations, Hull, Canada, will speak on Calendar Art of Tamil Nadu. (At DakshinaChitra, Details: 2446 2435.)
