Till February 7: Antique Finds, an exhibition of original lithographs, engravings and etchings of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The prints on display were made from original sketches and drawings by European artists, of scenes from India and the world (at C.P. Art Centre, 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.).

Till February 10: An exhibition of paintings by G. Raman, M. Pakiri, K.N. Ramachandran, C. Douglas, Rajavelu and Jaya­chand­ran based on characters seen in everyday life in rural South India (at Athreyaa Art Gallery, Chetpet).


Till February 14: Travelling Lens Eye, photo exhibition of the work of Varun Gupta during his travels in Ladakh (at Max Mueller Bhavan).

Till February 15: Celebrating Devi, an exhibition by the students of the Madras Craft Foundation Arts Management Program. The exhibition explores manifestations of the goddess in South India both in Brahmanical temples and village shrines, the festivals in which the goddess is worshipped, such as Navarathri in the South and Durga Puja in Bengal, the changing representations of the goddess in popular art and the basic concepts and legends of Devi which form the beliefs and rituals of today.

Calendar of events during the exhibition:

February 5-9: Padayani performances from Kadamanitta, led by Dr. Vasudev Pillai. Also mask making workshop.

Till February 15: The making of Durga by Shilpi Kishori Mohan Pal from Kolkata. Workshops around Durga (T-shirt embossing of Devi). (At Dakshina­Chitra)

Till February 15: Photo and painting exhibition by Muzibar Rahaman Biplab (at Alliance Francaise).

February 5: Hip Hop Workshop by Denis Koone Kuhnert in cooperation with The Verb School of Dance. In his workshop Koone will create new dance moves to the music of contemporary Hip Hop artistes. In close cooperation with the participants he will develop individual choreographies and look at the creativity of each person (at Max Mueller Bhavan).

February 7: E.T.E. – Extended Teenage Era directed by Samir Akika (at Sir Mutha Venkata­subba Rao Concert Hall, 7.00 p.m.). E.T.E. is a Hip-Hop-theatre-dance-fusion. It is a play about the dreams, nightmares and visions of Western youth in the 21st century.
Bread and Jam Degustation. La Boulangerie brings you a wide selection of authentic French breads. And Les Confitures du Jardin bring you some delicious jam to go with your breads (at Alliance Francaise, 5.00 p.m.).

February 9: Dr. Stephen Inglis, Deputy Director, Canadian Museum of Civilisations, Hull, Canada, will speak on Calendar Art of Tamil Nadu. (At DakshinaChitra, Details: 2446 2435.)

February 14: Wine Degustation with Bruno Monange. Bring your Valentine and celebrate the day with some of the finest French wines. The session will be conducted by Dr. Bruno Monange, a medical doctor by profession and a connoisseur of wines. The workshop will be about processing wine, differnt types of wine, how to choose wine, how to drink it, how to appreciate and also the social aspects of wine drinking etc. It will end with wine tasting (at Alliance Francaise, 7.00 p.m.).

February 15-28: Exhibition of surrealist drawings by Pierre Desfons (at Alliance Francaise).


Jaffna Library

February 16: Burning Memories, a documentary film by Somee­tharan on the burning of the most important library belonging to the Tamil, and the socio-political violence connected with it (at Alliance Francaise, 6.30 p.m.).

February 17: Lanka – the other side of war and peace, a documentary film by Iffat Fatima. The film is an act of recalling and remembering the brutal and tragic consequences of the use of violence, and its legitimisation for perpetuation of power (at Alliance Francaise, 6.30 p.m.).

February 17-28: Werner Herzog – Film muss physisch sein (Film must be physical), a photo exhibition put together on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Werner Herzog one of Germany’s greatest and most controversial film directors. The photos capture the director at work during various films shoots. Most of the photos were taken by Beat Presser, the set photographer for three of Herzog’s films.

The exhibition (at Max Mueller Bhavan) is accompained by a Werner Herzog film series at the Film Chamber Theatre in cooperation with the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (February 16-20).

February 21: Skrat, formed in July 2006 with only one aim and that is to play music appealing to both the audience and to themselves. They will play music that traverses from the 1960s to date, with some of their own scintillating compositions (at Alliance  Francaise).
