A heritage competition
At the coordinating team draws up plans for Madras Week (August 16th-23rd), Mylapore Times announces a contest for schools and reminds readers of the T-shirt design contest announced earlier.
Contest for schools
In connection with Madras Week 2009, a multimedia presentation contest on ‘The Heritage of Chennai’ is being held for city schools.
The contest aims to encourage students to explore Chennai’s history and heritage and present the topic of their choice in multimedia form.
Buildings and monuments, religious places and tiled houses, colonies, forested areas and lakes, institutions – be they cinema houses, schools, business houses – any of these can be the subject of your presentation.
The contest is open to school children in Classes 8 to 12.
A school can send only one team. Each team MUST have three (3) members. (More details on www.themadrasday.in)
The contest will be held on August 18th, 9 a.m. onwards, at Sastri Hall, Mylapore. But schools who wish to take part must register rightaway. Call Revathi R. at 98405 44629.
The BEST three presentations will be awarded trophies and certificates. All participants will be given certificates.
T-Shirt design contest
This is a reminder for graphic/fashion/digital designers and students of the city to get down to showing their creativity in designing a T-shirt for the city.
The design should reflect the spirit and uniqueness of Chennai. The design can be done using Adobe/CorelDraw design softwares.
Submit your design as a jpeg file (700 x 700 pixels size of 150 depi) to madrasday@yahoo.com. Or mail the CD with the design to The Organisers, Madras Day, c/o Mylapore Times, 77 C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet, Chennai 600 018, before August 1st.
The BEST design will win Rs. 2500 and a certificate. The best submission may be used on a T-shirt planned for next year.

A few people interested in the history of Madras that is Chennai have been responsible for encouraging the celebration of the founding of the city by schools, colleges, various organisations and groups of like-minded individuals. Participation is purely a voluntary effort by those wanting to organise programmes during the Week. The role of the informal group of co-coordinators is only to encourage such participation, try to organise publicity for the events and, where possible, arrange venues. Growing from about 15 events in the first year, last year’s celebrations comprised about 75 programmes, including talks, quizzes, exhibitions and performances, all centred on the theme ‘Madras’.
We are announcing these dates well ahead so that organisations/individuals/volunteer groups who wish to celebrate the founding of this city have ample time to plan their events. Madras Musings and Mylapore Times can provide advisory help where needed.
