Karpagambal Mess goes and returns

Foodies who swear by Karpagambal Mess on Mylapore’s East Mada Street will have to look for alternative restaurants for the next couple of months.

For, the building which housed Mylai Sri Karpagambal Mess has been demolished and a new one is being constructed on the same plot.

S. Prabhudas, son of its founder, R. Soundararajan, says that work has begun on a three-storeyed building and that the ‘Mess’ will open by September.

The new Mess will retain its traditional features and to ensure it does, Prabhudas has sourced men and materials from Chidambaram and Kumbakonam.

“The new place will not be flashy,” says Prabhudas. “It will look like a traditional home, a place where you dine in a homely and spiritual atmosphere.”

Founded in 1955, Karpagambal Mess is a ‘must’ destination for foodies looking for the Madras touch. Over the years, the place looked run down and some of its dishes became only passable.

Prabhudas now has the opportunity to renew a great tradition.
