April 6: Vandalising ancient heritage, a talk by Chithra Madhavan; desKilling of Art – on Banner Artists, a film by Gita; and First Light – on M. Suriyamoorthi, a film tribute to the artist who passed away on December 31st, by Gita (at Lalit Kala Akademi, 5 p.m.).
Till April 7: This Figured: Murals, Vandalism & Visualities, a joint exhibition by Gita, K.T. Gandhirajan and Roos Gerritsen.
The walls shown in this exhibition have various connections to the world around them. They explore the iconoclasm on early murals that has been traced, as depicted by Gandhirajan, to the new inspirations that the older murals have triggered, portrayed in Gita's paintings and the elaborate visual street culture in Chennai's urban spaces, as shown in Roos' images (At Lalit Kala Akademi.)
April 8-June 30: A joint exhibition by Gita, K.T. Gandhirajan and Roos Gerritsen (at DakshinaChitra).
April 11-14: Ugadi celebration (New Year in Andhra Pradesh) with a Mayilattam folk performance (April 11th). This will be followed by Puthandu or Chithirai Tirunaal, Tamil New Year Day, and Vishu (Kerala New Year). Tamil New Year (April 13th) will be welcomed with a Thappattam performance, and Vishu (April 14th) with an elegant display of Vishu Kani, a ritual arrangement with auspicious Kerala New Year item placed in front of a mirror (at DakshinaChitra).
April 20-29: Exhibition of paintings by V. Ravichandran (at DakshinaChitra).
