If you see a snake...
If you See a Snake... A practical guide for the perplexed by B. Vijayaraghavan of the Chennai Snake Park Trust, who offers this advice:

If you see a snake in an area not frequented by humans, leave it alone. Allow it to go about its business as it wishes.

Remember, the land was theirs before it became yours!

If the snake is seen in an area frequented by humans such as inside a house, in gardens or land adjacent to the house etc., then:

  • Do not go too near the snake. Some snakes may rush forward or take a leap forward.
  • Move away from the snake slowly, gently.
  • Don't scare the snake! If you make quick movements, the snake may get scared and attack. If you remain still, the snake may remain calm – it may even fail to notice you! The eyesight of snakes is often not good enough to easily notice stationary objects, but moving objects are easily noticed.
  • Do not block its escape route.
  • Direct it gently to an escape route with a long stick.
  • If the snake cannot be induced to escape, then it may have to be caught.

If you are not experienced in catching snakes, do not, as far as possible, do it yourself. Get the assistance of a person experienced in snake-catching. In many cities, staff of the Forest Department render this service.
