Dates for your Diary

Till June 30: This Figured: Murals, Vandalism & Visualities, a joint exhibition by Gita, K.T. Gandhirajan and Roos Gerritsen.

The walls shown in this exhibition have various connections to the world around them. They explore the iconoclasm on early murals that has been traced, as depicted by Gandhirajan, to the new inspirations that the older murals have triggered, portrayed in Gita's paintings and the elaborate visual street culture in Chennai's urban spaces, as shown in Roos' images (at DakshinaChitra).

April 19: The Music of Monk, 10th Anniversary Concert by Madhav Chari.

2013 marks the 10th year international jazz pianist Madhav Chari has been in residence in Chennai. His very first India concert was in April 2003 at Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai. This concert is a celebration of the continued relationship between Goethe Institut and Madhav Chari. The programme starts with a very brief medley of songs by Austrian-German composer Kurt Well, and continues with the music of Thelonious Monk, one of the geniuses of Jazz music. Monk is the third great jazz composer in the line that starts with Jelly Roll Morton and followed by Duke Ellington. He was one of the seminal founding members of the bebop movement within Jazz in the late 1930s/early 1940s (at Goethe Institut, 7.30 p.m.).
