DakshinaChitra Workshops

For children:

October 16: Sculpture making (eco and recycle material).

For adults:

October 22-23: Thappattam and Oyillattam.

October 29: Soft stone jewellery.

Till October 10: Art exhibition by Rajendran (at DakshinaChitra).

Till October 13: Foregrounding the Background, is an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by P.S. Nandan, A.P. Pannerselvam, G. Raman, A. Selvaraj and the late T.R.P. Mookiah.

The background, or generally ‘the ground’, is variously known as space from which every form emerges. A white canvas can be intimidating or inviting to an artist. The form that emerges from every stroke of a painter’s brush or a sculptor’s chisel is but the disturbance on this blank space. Is the painter sculpting in this space or creating over it? This question has always been an enigma that fills the creator.

In this show five artists confronted this enigma in their media and demonstrate personal styles that address the conflict of the ground and the theme (at Art & Soul).

October 14-28: Photo show on Pulicat by the Aarde Foundation (at DakshinaChitra).

From October 21: Retrospective of artist P. Perumal’s work. P. Perumal, a senior artist who played a significant role in the art movement in Chennai, is known for his canvases of rural life created using a language that is at once contemporary and rustic. In his unique visions that combine tradition and the modern, he echoes the philosophy of DakshinaChitra that presents tradition but within the context of the present day (at DakshinaChitra).
