Introducing the Nam Stamp Repository, a unique collection of rubber stamps inspired by Madras (Chennai) and its iconic landmarks, people, and objects. Conceptualized by Thirupurasundari Sevvel during the COVID-19 lockdown, this project brought together more than 60 rubber stamp makers from Chennai, showcasing the city’s vibrant culture and heritage.
The repository features an impressive array of stamps designed by various artists, including Devika, Sristi, Kamalasini (Pondicherry) and Thirupurasundari herself. Some notable stamps include “Flavours of Madras” by Muhilan and Sristi, showcasing the city’s culinary delights, and stamps representing prominent institutions like the High Court, The Fine Arts College, Tamil Nadu Archives, Madras Literary Society and many more.
The stamp kits are part of a broader initiative that includes five autos equipped with moving libraries and stamp kits, bringing the repository to the streets of Chennai. The Nam Heritage Passport (now as pilot project) allows users to collect stamps from each building, location or experience, creating a unique record of their journey through Madras.
Recently, a few new stamps have been added to the collection: the iconic Nalli Art Deco stamp celebrating the city’s iconic textile heritage, the Kavingar Kannadasan stamp honouring the legendary Tamil poet and songwriter, and stamps on trees and birds of Madras too.
The Nam Stamp Repository is a celebration of the rich tangible and intangible heritage of Madras (Chennai). By exploring this unique collection, visitors can learn about the city’s history and culture, and join in preserving the city’s cultural legacy. The repository is a testament to the city’s vibrant spirit and its people’s passion for preserving their heritage.
