That Madras as a name existed in Vijayanagar times is evident from the Krishnagiri inscription that S Rajavelu of the ASI unearthed a few years ago. By the time the British came, it was a village under Chengalpattu. What better image this week than the Vijayanagar emblem depicted on the wall of the Rama temple at Oonamanjeri in Chengalpattu? The place still retains vestiges of the Vijayanagar era, perhaps like what Madras was when the British came.
