Our Heritage Watch this time is rather long, in keeping with the never-ending quest that our Presidency, Province and State have been on. Our Pic 1 is Chepauk Palace, near which in 1896 the Government first thought of building a secretariat. Our Pic 2 is of Ezhilagam which did come up there, around sixty years later. Our Pic 3 is of the present Assembly cum Secretariat, which at least since 1861 has been fulfilling this purpose, though much of the present structure dates to 1910. Our Pic 4 is of the University Senate House that saw the Assembly function in it in 1937, followed by Rajaji (old Banqueting) Hall (Pic 5), which too played host in 1938. Our Pic 6 is of Kalaivanar Arangam which was built to house the Assembly but never did, becoming the Children’s Theatre instead. Pic 7 is the new building that the DMK Government constructed in 2010 and which is now a hospital.
