At long last, the Greater Chennai Corporation has completed its purely superfluous renovation of the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore. It was completely unnecessary as the park was flourishing even otherwise. What we have lost are several trees and what we have gained is an enormous pergola whose function people are yet to fathom. A bigger loss however has been the original commemorative plaque, let into the entrance gatepost in 1948. Why this could not have been saved is beyond any comprehension.
It is a matter of small satisfaction that a new plaque commemorates the first donors, but it is behind so many bushes that nobody can read it, as the NEW picture by Karthik Bhatt shows. Our OLD is a picture of Nageswara Rao Park taken in 1948, courtesy the GCC archives.
