Our pictures are both of recent vintage. The first is of the Santhome cathedral, captured last week. Its history is well documented. The present structure, handsome as it is, however is only from the 1880s, the earlier being a domed edifice of Portuguese design. Our other picture, by Surya Kumar, is of the 1894 consecrated Church of the Assumption, which is in an area known as Darkhast, in erstwhile Chengalpattu and now in Chennai, located in PIN code 600045. It’s history however is sadly undocumented. Even the locals do not know much about it. Perhaps the Catholic diocese ought to consider a serious documentation exercise of its churches.
