In this fast-changing world, there are moments when just seeing something remain unchanged can be soothing. A glance at our images, taken respectively in 2017 and 2026, seem to indicate that the tomb of Dr James Anderson, Botanist, at the St Mary’s Cemetery on the Island, has survived unchanged. Gone of course is the undergrowth that was threatening to swallow it, but unremovable has been the tree that has it in its grip. Jeernodhar Conservators, who have been tasked by the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia with restoring the cemetery have decided to let the tree be, building in some safeguards to protect the canopy. Perhaps the botanist wanted it that way.
